History

Isla Holbox (hol-bosh) was originally settled by the Mayan people and later inhabited by pirates. Descendants of the original 8 families still reside there today.

The solitary village of 1500 has sand-lined streets and brightly painted wooden houses. Themajority of people are fishermen. They catch red snapper, bonitos and grouper; lobster and octopus in season.

The primary form of transportation is golf cart. you may bring your own or rent.

 

How to get there

Bus or car from Merida to Ferry Crossings or launches at Chiquila.
